Renovations continue
Starting Monday, August 23, the entrance to the library will be through the Community Room. It's at the far end of the parking lot. Follow the signs to the lovely walkway which will take you to the entrance. The Circulation desk will be located in the Community room. This is happening to allow construction of the new circulation area and the new entrance to begin.
NO BOOK DROP will be available for the next few months. If you cannot get to the library during our regular hours, please return your library items to neighboring libraries, such as, Nyack, New City, West Nyack, Nanuet, etc.

The Walls
If you've been to the library in the past few weeks you will have witnessed the rapid progress the renovation is taking. The foundation has been laid and the walls are going up quickly. Next, the steel girders will be installed. To get a real sense of what the renovation will look like visit the library. There is a floor plan on an easel just inside to the left as you walk in. We have modified the Children's Summer Reading program just a little to accommodate short notice interruptions that may occur as the wall between the new and old building takes place. When that happens we will be shifting books around in the children's room. Our plans are to remain open and active all summer!

Addition and Alteration to the Valley Cottage Library - 2010
This project is a solution to the overcrowded space conditions at the Circulation Desk in the library. The Circulation Desk is the main hub of business transactions at the library. All telephone calls are received and transmitted from here; all materials are checked in and checked out to patrons; all deliveries of materials are received here. When the Circulation desk was last replaced in 1994 the world of library materials circulation was quite different. The advent of electronic interlibrary loan in 1995-96 drastically changed the volume of materials that are received and processed daily at this desk. And, the last five years have seen such rapid growth in technology that the current space is no longer efficient to meet the needs of the public.
The planned design will open the wall behind the Circulation Desk to create an office for the Circulation Staff. Here, phone calls will be received and most of the returned materials will be checked in. By assuming 500 square feet of space from the current Children’s Room (the current picture book area) which is located directly behind the Circulation Desk, we will be able to address this need. We will also install a staircase in this new office to access additional storage (non-public) and mechanical space that is now unfinished attic space above the Circulation Office.
Because we will be assuming space that is currently used and needed by the Children’s Department, we are adding 1470 square feet on the south side (parking lot side) of the children’s room. This will be replacing floor space that is being added to the circulation office and includes an additional Story Room for the smallest children. The current story room will be refashioned for the older children ages 6 and up. The plan includes bringing more interactive and discovery tools and resources to address the early literacy needs of young children.
In addition, there will be a new entry vestibule and space for 2 book drops. The walkway to the entrance will be moved slightly west and a new overhead covering will shield users from the elements when entering and leaving the building.
The architect for this project is Michael Esmay, from Upper Nyack, NY who has also designed all the other alterations to this building. The builder is Ralph Derven from Piermont, NY
Construction is expected to take approximately eight months. If you have further questions please feel free to call or email the director, Amelia Kalin – 845-268-7700 or akalin@rcls.org.
When this project is completed work will begin to address the shortage of parking spaces in our main lot. We plan to double if not triple the current parking which is 47 spaces.
The Board of Trustees is confident and hopeful that these improvements will enable Valley Cottage Library to continue its tradition of bringing excellent service and resources to the people of the Nyack School District.
